It took me 7 years to resolve my lower back problem. It first happened in November 2007, a few weeks after coming from a World Championships in Germany. I was deadlifting and felt a ping in my lower back. I was in agony and whenever my back was in full extension, the pain would kick in. I put it down to the volume of training I had been doing for a few years- martial arts training 4 sessions a week alongside 3 strength sessions a week.
Moving around day to day was hard. I had brace my whole core at all times, if I forgot to brace, the slightest move would send shooting pain through my body.
I tried numerous therapies over those 7 years: acupuncture and traditional Chinese Medicine (being Chinese, my mum would have killed me if I didn't try), sports therapy, a range of massage therapies, chiropractics, physiotherapy, movement specialists. Some of these were world-class therapists working with elite athletes. What I got was short-term relief for a long-term problem. Visit after visit, it was the same painful treatment of poking, stretching, massaging, manipulating my lower back. After 7 years, I believed I would probably have to live with the pain for the rest of my life.
But in 2014, I came across a therapist doing something very unusual and thought what have I got to lose? The pain was greater than my cynicism and I wanted that pain GONE. In that one session, he found my lower back problem was actually caused by my BREATHING. He didn't even do any work on my lower back. 2 days later I hit a personal best deadlifting 165kg for 3 reps (I was a massive sceptic and the day before my treatment, I was only able to deadlift 130kg for 1 rep and it was HARD!). And it felt comfortable. So he became my mentor, teaching me how, and more importantly why, his solution worked. I blended this knowledge with my other therapeutic training and The Pain-Free Ninja Method was born.
You are why I do what I do
As a father, I can't imagine not being able to play with my son because getting down on the floor would be only half as painful as getting back up. As an athlete, it would kill me to have pain keep me from competition. So having a skill that helps people change their lives, helps them return to what they enjoy, and offering a solution to chronic pain or pain that other therapies have not been able to solve, this is why I do what I do. Being pain free not only changes you physically with better posture and efficiency when moving around, but also mentally. As a business owner, nothing is worse than having pain distracting your thoughts, taking up mental energy to constantly suppress it. Being in pain means you are not operating at 100% and your customers and clients deserve your 100%. Laser sharp focus from being free from pain means you are constantly on the ball and productivity sky rockets. Outside of work, it means you don't have to talk about your pain. And I'm sure you are fed up of talking about it as your co-workers are of hearing about it.
There's nothing better than seeing people who have pretty much settled on the fact that they might have to live with their pain forever, move more comfortably and easily without pain, be able to enjoy life and spend time with their loved ones. Seeing athletes hit new personal bests in their training and competition after months of plateau from as quick as one session. Hearing from business clients that are able to take their business to new levels and making a tonne of money because they are finally able to think clearly. It gives me great joy to help people return to their previous activity levels and be able to enjoy their life without the frustration of pain and injury holding them back. My clients, you make this the best job ever.
